Gareth Pugh Sets London Retrospective

Jan. 30, 2015

Gareth Pugh is not only returning to London Fashion Week to mark his 10 years in business: He also plans to stage a retrospective at Galeria Melissa Covent Garden.

There will be a party to mark the opening on Feb. 10 at Galeria Melissa, the new flagship store of the Brazilian plastic shoe brand Melissa, and the show will run from Feb. 11 through May.

Organizers said the Galeria Melissa space, at 43 King Street, will be transformed “to embrace the key visual codes of Gareth Pugh’s conceptual design, in both the entrance and lower basement spaces.”

Several of Pugh’s archival pieces (including a cage-like dress that sums up his take of fashion as “modern armor”) will be on display, all of course styled with Melissa shoes. The exhibit will be set against exclusive footage created by Pugh’s longtime collaborator, filmmaker Ruth Hogben.

Melissa, a longtime collaborator of Pugh’s, is also the head sponsor of the designer’s London catwalk show on Feb. 21, and all of his models will be wearing the brand’s Solider style from fall-winter 2014.

“I’m totally energized at the prospect of showing on home ground after seven years on the Paris schedule. London is where everything began for me – it’s where I live and work and my entire creative family is here,” Pugh said.

The designer told WWD the show is not intended to be a one-off, and that he plans to remain part of the LFW calendar in the future. Pugh usually shows his collections in Paris and staged a presentation in New York last September.
