Dutch fashion designer Iris van Herpen collaborated with Björk on the performance artist’s most elaborately staged concert to date, ‘Cornucopia.’ The concert took place at New York’s new cultural hub, the Shed, in Hudson Yards.
Van Herpen’s collections are often architectural in ambition and appear as if they descended from the future or a parallel universe. A longtime collaborator with Björk, van Herpen created the ‘Sphaera’ dress, inspired by an orchid-avatar that hovers like an aura around her body, continuing to change shape as the singer moved across the stage. In collaboration with the light artist Nick Verstand, the ‘Sphaera’ dress turned into a bioluminescent creature during the performance.
“We talked a lot: for the piece, I began by focusing on the hybrid approach of this performance, how it’s really about nature but also the future of nature. I wanted to have this expression of an explosion, there was so much thought and energy she put into the performance, and it was really a challenge to fit into one piece. It felt like we were making three.”
