The World Stage: Jamaica marked Kehinde Wiley’s first UK solo exhibition, featuring Jamaican men and women posed after 17th- and 18th-century British portraits.
The series examines Jamaica’s relationship with its former colonial power while reimagining historical ideals of race, gender, beauty, and heroism.
Wiley combines detailed figures with ornate patterns inspired by William Morris, contrasting classical portraiture with contemporary Jamaican culture. A film documenting his research and casting process in London and Jamaica accompanied the exhibition.
