The World Stage: Haiti explores Haiti’s culture, history, and socioeconomic conditions through Kehinde Wiley’s portraits of its people.
Departing from his usual street casting, Wiley held open calls through radio, posters, and beauty pageants in Jacmel, Jalouise, and Port-au-Prince. Pageant contestants became the subjects of paintings inspired by European Old Masters.
Drawing on Haiti’s colonial history, religious traditions, and decorative arts, Wiley incorporates local imagery such as okra and sugarcane into the backgrounds. The exhibition features 12 paintings and forms part of Wiley’s ongoing World Stage series.
