L.A. Designer Greg Lauren Has Cozy New Knitwear Collab With Americana Vibe

Signatures of L.A.-based artist and designer Greg Lauren’s eponymous fashion brand are easygoing, hand-distressed pieces such as frayed flannel shirts and Baja hoodies, lounge pants crafted from vintage Army parkas and vintage denim integrated into jackets, shirts and kimonos. Now Lauren (who is Ralph Lauren’s nephew) has teamed up with Italian luxury knitwear label Alanui on a new 8-piece collaboration that launches today exclusively on mrporter.com, expanding to Barneys, Neiman Marcus and Maxfield next month. This is the first collaboration for Alanui, founded by siblings Carlotta and Nicolò Oddi in 2016.
The unisex Alanui + Greg Lauren capsule line ($2865-$6490) includes unisex Baja hoodies, field jackets, lounge pants and riffs on Alanui’s boldly-patterned cashmere cardigan coats with aged denim or canvas insets and trims.
“I met Carlotta and Nicolò in Paris in 2017 at the launch of my collab with Moncler,” Lauren exclusively tells The Hollywood Reporter, referring to the Moncler x Greg Lauren spring 2017 capsule line. “When I learned more about Alanui, I was struck by their passion for Americana-inspired themes. Being that this is such a personal part of my DNA, I was intrigued by the idea of these images seen through the eyes and perspective of two Italian artists.”
The partnership was born in April, when the Oddis landed in Los Angeles for a research trip and met up with Lauren. “It was a very natural fit,” says Lauren. “The pieces already embodied a relaxed, but very luxe approach to a specific reference of Americana, so I was immediately able to deconstruct and bring a contradiction to the pieces, using my artisanal style of design and construction and use of repurposed vintage fabrics. The pieces are all handcrafted in Italy, with an incredible L.A. vibe,” Carlotta Oddi tells THR exclusively. “Los Angeles has always been a point of reference for us when we design and I consider it a second home! I love to wander through the vintage stores in search of inspiration, and the Rose Bowl [Flea Market] is on my ‘not to miss’ list. Craftsmanship and quality are extremely important to us and we often mix many different knitwear techniques such as crochet, needle-punch and hand embroideries within each style.”
