François Halard – Modern Spirit, a Stopover in the Mediterranean

Jul. 21, 2020

In the rooms of the Hôtel des Arts, the photographer François Halard will allow us to discover his perspective on the architectural and artistic heritage of Toulon.

In 2017, he produced a series of photographs for a monographic exhibition Suite Méditerranéenne presented as part of Design Parade Toulon 2. He explored the villas, artists’ studios and Modernist buildings built on the coast. The Toulon Provence Méditerranée metropolis then acquired part of the prints.

This summer, new images will enrich the whole and complete the panorama offered around the period of reconstruction in Toulon. In particular, we will rediscover the collaborations between architect Alfred Henry and artist-decorator Jean-Gérard Mattio and the villa E-1027 by architect Eileen Gray, whose furniture and architecture have marked the history of the decorative arts.

François Halard’s work will interact with that of Alexandre Benjamin Navet, a young artist winner of the Grand Prix du Jury Design Parade Toulon Van Cleef & Arpels in 2017, whose fresco will reinvent the facade of the Hôtel des Arts. His work will act as the common thread of the “L’été à Toulon” exhibitions by investing in the three flagship venues of the event.
